In this world, there is a great deal of confusion between spirit and matter. People see themselves and the situations that arise in the world as separate from spirit, as needing to come closer to spirit. This is the great tragedy of the Judeo-Christian models of religion; that they have evolved a language which implies an inherent split when in fact the opposite is the case. This language has developed, in part, in order to empower the structure and the priesthood of the respective churches, but it is also true that that which starts out in service to something is likely to evolve into that which dominates it, unless the original form keeps evolving and being transcended. And so you can see that forms which originally evolved to empower spiritual communion have atrophied into forms which limit and control that experience.
There is no separation between form and spirit, none whatsoever. There is no situation on this earth which is not the manifestation of spirit at play. And in the same way that a child playing the part of a villain in a game is not himself inherently bad, so the situations that you term tragic or negative are not inherently godless. Spirit loves a good drama! It enters this plain to know itself and to know itself in all aspects. It is a kaleidoscopic phantasmagoria - to be wondered at but not taken too seriously, not taken as real.
There is no need for you to approach spirit or to search for truth. It is the very nature of your existence. All you have to do is recognize it as it lives in you. It is your passion and your fire, your softness and sweetness, your undiluted flame of life in all its aspects. It does not ask to be perfect, only alive. It does not judge or refuse, it only savors and embraces. Spirit leaps into the moment without hesitation. Whatever the moment, it relates with joy. Even in pain, in war, in death, it enters in joy. That this is anomalous to you, that it shocks, is only because you have forgotten who you are.
Find that which gives you joy. Be it dance, time in nature, meditation, sports, whatever causes your heart to soar, go there to know yourself as spirit. It is the love of something for itself alone with no concern about outcome. It is the precious moment of presence through which silent joy is felt. In these moment you meet yourself as spirit. The more you allow your heart to dance, the closer you come to your true nature. Cultivate this and your worries, your neuroses, your limitations melt away.
In a world of suffering and pain, that which heals comes only out of joy. Though you are trained in the philosophies of martyrdom and self-sacrifice, nothing is ever gained by willful addition to the burden of pain that already exists in the world. Find your joy, cultivate it, and you will overflow in love. Then your capacity to help and to heal others will arise without effort as a natural side effect of your communion with yourself-as-spirt. Only a full vessel can outpour. Know this, live this, and you will be transformed.
